As an individual who enjoys writing on musings stuff and random thoughts, I find myself having not only one diary but 5 diaries over the span of 6 years. However, the existence of blog soon made me realised that it was relatively more convenient and efficient to organise my daily thoughts online as compared to jotting them down on papers.
Today, I am not the only one, but I am amongst millions of those who own one or many blogs.
Types of blogs
Wikipedia (2008) mentioned, blogs differ in terms of content as well as the way it is delivered and written.
Blogs can either be a personal blog or a corporate blog. Personal blogs like Sweatlee, Pinkpau and KarenCheng are similar to personal diary. Conversely, corporate blogs such as Serverfreak and Kodak are usually used by organisations for business purposes ranging from marketing to branding and public relations efforts.
Blogs are also classified by genres such as travel blog, food blog, music blog, political blog, so on and so forth. They can also be classified by media type. For instance, blogs that contain video are known as vlog, while blogs that contain photos are called photolog. We can also divide them according to the device used to publish the blog such as a moblog is a blog written by mobile devices such as handphones.
The current blogosphere ...
According to Technorati (2008) which is currently monitoring 112.8 million blogs in 81 different languages, blogging is a worldwide trend that is "shifting the Internet paradigm".
In Technorati's State of the Blogosphere 2008 report, it is revealed that:-
(i) Two-thirds of globe bloggers are male
(ii) Music is more popular and politics is less popular in Asia, while personal, lifestyle, and religious topics are less popular in Europe.
(iii) The two top reasons for blogging are self expression and sharing expertise
The blogging community …
Due to the abundant ways bloggers are come along, the blogosphere today is filled with an array of blogging communities. Above all, the power of blogging has pushed the boundaries of advertising, marketing and business of the 21st century.
For example, in Malaysia, companies like Nuffnang and Advertlets are helping bloggers to turn their passion for sharing and exchanging information via blogs into a business that generates income for bloggers. Hence, today, advertisers and marketers are looking at bloggers as a medium to create buzz for their products or services.
On a personal note
Blogging has uplifts the whole idea of borderless communication to another level. With a mere click of the mouse, people around the world with internet connections are able to share and exchange information. As Pruitt (2005) explained, "Never before has a medium as the Internet offered the promise of instant publishing to so many readers."
Blogging shows that multimodality is prevalent in our society today. As defined by Walsh (2006, p.24) multimodality is the incorporation of 'spoken or written language, still or moving images, all which can be produced on paper or electronic screen and may also include music and sound'. Indeed, the emergence of multimodal text is a symbol of the new visual literacy era.
